Local Study Tour 2025

GITAM School of Architecture, Visakhapatnam, conducted a local study tour from February 17th to 21st, 2025, focusing on artisan communities in the region. Second-semester B.Arch. students, accompanied by their design faculty, embarked on a comprehensive case study and documentation tour to understand how culture, lifestyle, and the processes involved in creating artifacts influence spatial configurations.

During the tour, students documented various aspects of the artisan communities, including the living spaces and workstations of artisans. They utilised multiple methods such as measurements, sketches, photography, videography, and interviews to gather insights. This immersive experience allowed students to explore the spatial requirements of different crafts, including: Wooden Toy Making in Etikoppaka,
Pottery in Jajulavanipalem,
Metal Craft in Budithi,
Internationally acclaimed Handloom from Ponduru,
Fisherman’s ‘Chuttillu’ (Circular Hut) from Chepaluppada.

Through this study, students gained a deeper understanding of the intricacies of artisan crafts and their impact on the design of living and working spaces, offering them valuable insights into how traditional craft practices shape spatial design.
